Inspired by the modern Arab woman, Shamsa Alabbar’s calligraphic jewellery combines traditional Arabic typography with contemporary and minimal graphic designs.
At Design Days Dubai 2015, young designer Shamsa Alabbar presented a jewelry collection that meshes millenary Arabic calligraphy with contemporary graphic design to create unusual beauty. “The project is inspired by the contemporary arab woman: modern, minimal but still embracing her arab roots and traditions” says the designer.
By introducing letters as an art form, the collection has been created for art and design lovers and for people who are not afraid of change and being different. The project is based on the geometric signature of the designer who has taken abstract shapes to form a unique asymmetric, balanced and complete graphic design.
Alabbar has also created a varied adaptation of arabic typography based on vertical and horizontal lines that create a simplified version of the arabic letters. An additional adaptation of arabic typography was then made by cropping the letters using a triangular shape. The result is modern design that resembles a hint of the arabic letter.
